What is PLE?
Do you have Polymorphic Light Eruption (PLE)? You’re not alone. The British Skin Foundation states that as many as 10-20% of people in Western countries have PLE, with women more prone to the condition than men[i].
A rash triggered by exposure to UV light, PLE can present as blisters, small red bumps or red patches. Most commonly, the rash affects exposed areas of skin, such as the arms, lower legs or chest and is usually accompanied by itching or burning.
According to the NHS, PLE should not be confused with eczema or heat rashii, a temporary rash caused by suppressed perspiration that becomes trapped under the surface of the skin.

What causes PLE?
So, what causes PLE? Well, to be honest, no one knows. All we can say for sure is that PLE is triggered by UV exposure and, according to the NHS, it can be triggered by both sun exposure and by artificial UV light[i].
While it comes as no surprise that PLE is worse in the warm summer months, you may be surprised to know that the symptoms tend to develop before the age of 30 and that symptoms typically improve after menopause[i]
The NHS also states that while the precise cause of PLE is not yet known, Polymorphic Light Eruption is likely an allergic reaction to substances formed in the skin as a result of exposure to sunlight[ii].
Benefits of antioxidant sunscreens for PLE
The NHS and British Skin Foundation currently advise anyone with PLE to manage their risk of a PLE rash by monitoring the amount of time spent in the sun and by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF50[i][ii].
Some studies advocate the benefits of using antioxidants for PLE, but more research is needed.
That said, the British Skin Foundation states on its website that “topical antioxidants (such as Vitamin E, in combination with UVA sunscreen) and topical corticosteroids help decrease itch” associated with PLE[i].
We’re big believers in the benefits of antioxidants too, and use antioxidants from Aloe Vera, Vitamin E and Edelweiss in almost all of our natural and organic sun creams, which are all dermatologically tested and clinically proven to be kind to sensitive skin.
These extracts contain a range of active ingredients called flavonoids that have a powerful antioxidant action against free radical activity, prevent oxidative changes and ultimately protect the living cells. These factors combine to protect your skin from a UV-exposed allergic reaction. Read more about the antioxidants in our sunscreens.
